This qualification reflects the role of a close protection operative who is responsible for providing security services to protect the safety and security of principals who may be celebrities, political figures, very important persons (VIPs) or other persons requiring close protection services.
Occupational titles include:
- Close protection operative
This qualification is suitable for people within the security industry who wish to specialise in the provision of close protection services. It provides a pathway to further learning and work in various security roles and settings, including security risk management.
Close protection operatives work in a team environment under limited supervision and use discretion and judgement in known and unpredictable work contexts. They take responsibility for their own outputs in work and learning, and limited responsibility for the output of others in the work team.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements
This qualification does not provide the required competencies for a security officer license. Learners who hold a security license may select units as part of this qualification required for additional license endorsements in;
- Batons and handcuffs
- Canine
- Cash-in-Transit
- Control room operations
- Firearms

Course Duration
The course can be delivered over a range of course durations, depending on the needs and characteristics of the student(s) and their employer(s) where relevant.
The standard course duration is:
- 6 months / 1 year full time; or
- 12 months / 2 years part time.
Students may complete the program earlier than these timelines through achievement of RPL, credit transfer or competency-based progression through the course, but students who are new to industry will most likely take longer to complete.

Theory Component
All Theory learning and assessment materials are Self-Paced Online Delivery
Practical Component
Upon successful completion of all theory components students will book in for practical training and assessment which is delivered and assessed as individual units. In Class practical

Entry Requirements
- Must hold a current Security Officers licensing in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Be over 18 Years of Age (it is a licensing requirement)
- Not have been convicted of a disqualifying offence in the last 10 years
- Have sound language and literacy skills (at least Year 10 English, or equivalent)
- Have basic computer skills
- Have good time management skills for self-paced learning
- Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold an appropriate Visa to work in Australia

Qualifications
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded the nationally recognised Australian qualification CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protections.
Packaging Rules
To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:
14 units of competency:
- 8 core units
- 6 elective units
The elective units listed below are the units required to apply to add the Bodyguard function to your licence.
If you already hold Certificate III in Security Operations you may be eligible for Credit Transfers.
You may choose other electives if you do not wish to apply for your Bodyguard licence.

Outcomes
Successful participants will be eligible to add to their existing skill sets and will be eligible to apply to the Office of fair trading to add Bodyguard functions to their Class 1 Security Officer Providers License.
QLD Security Providers License Applications are processed by the Office of Fair Trading after completing your course.
Fees are payable for the license application, criminal history check and fingerprinting. These fees are not included in the course fee and should be paid separately to the Office of Fair Trading with your license application.
